"Barbie" Takes the Lead with 9 Golden Globe Nominations, "Oppenheimer" Trails Close Behind

Ryan Gosling, left, and Margot Robbie pose for photographers upon arrival at the premiere of the film 'Barbie' on July 12, 2023, in London.

Greta Gerwig's cinematic spectacle, "Barbie," emerged as the frontrunner in the Golden Globe Awards nominations, securing an impressive nine nods, including the coveted Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category. The star-studded film also earned acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, along with recognition for three original songs.

Following closely in the nomination race was Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," with a total of eight nominations, including Best Picture in the Drama category. The film boasts acting nods for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

This year's nominations mark a significant shift for the Golden Globes, now a for-profit entity with a more extensive and diverse voting body. The announcement, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, sets the stage for the awards show on January 7, promising a new chapter after past scandals and challenges, including a year without a broadcast.

The Best Motion Picture Drama category includes tough contenders such as "Oppenheimer," Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," Bradley Cooper's "Maestro," Celine Song's "Past Lives," Justine Triet's "Anatomy of a Fall," and Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest."

In the Musical or Comedy category, "Barbie" faces competition from "Air," "American Fiction," "The Holdovers," "May December," and "Poor Things."

Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things" and Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" closely trail with seven nominations each, celebrating excellence in various categories.

Netflix emerged as the leader in nominations, securing 13 nods overall, featuring films like "Maestro," "May December," and "Rustin." Warner Bros. follows closely with 12 nominations for films like "Barbie," "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and "The Color Purple."

Notable surprises in the nominations include Jennifer Lawrence's recognition for her R-rated comedy "No Hard Feelings" in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy category. "The Color Purple" received fewer nominations than expected, with only two nods for actors Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks.

The Golden Globes, facing criticism in previous years for its lack of diversity, now boasts a more inclusive voting body of 300 members. This inclusivity is reflected in the recognition of international films and actors, such as the Finnish comedy "Fallen Leaves," the courtroom thriller "Anatomy of a Fall," and the Auschwitz drama "The Zone of Interest."

The 81st Golden Globe Awards, set to air on CBS, will mark the beginning of the awards season, offering a fresh start for the prestigious ceremony. The past few years have seen turmoil behind the scenes, with ethical lapses exposed, but the show remains a highlight in the industry calendar, promising a night of celebration and recognition for outstanding achievements in film and television.
